With the exception of the City of Sylvia burn site: no papers, shavings, weeds, brush, grass, leaves, trash, rubbish, tree trimmings, etc., shall be burned outside at any time in the city.

This article shall not be construed to prohibit the burning-off of dry grass which shall be permitted at the discretion and express authorization of the fire chief as evidenced by a properly issued written permit.

Bonfires for pep rallies and other special occasions shall be permitted at the discretion and express authorization of the fire chief evidenced by a properly issued written permit specifically noting time, place, and duration.

A fire may be built in any outdoor stove, oven, fireplace, chiminea, barbeque pit, or portable burner for the purpose of cooking food: provided that any such unit shall be solidly enclosed on all sides and the top surface shall be covered in a material such as wire mesh sufficient to contain any burning embers and ash. Any fire so started shall be extinguished and made safe before the persons starting and maintaining the same shall leave the place where the fire was started.

With the exception of properly maintained mulch piles, accumulations of waste paper, hay, grass, straw, weeds, litter or combustible or flammable waste, rubbish or trash of any kind shall not be permitted to remain in any part of any building, structure or upon roof thereof.

Any person violating any of the provisions of this article shall, upon conviction thereof, be fined in any sum not exceeding $100.00, court fees in the amount of $94.50, or be imprisoned not to exceed 30 days, or be so fined and imprisoned.
